How and/or where did you start comedy?

I started my stand up comedy journey in LA, but I’ve been a Colorado comedian for ten years.  I went to college for Acting, and after college, I signed up for improv and acting classes in the valley.  One night a friend from improv and I went to see another actor friend on a stand up showcase. Our friend was hilarious, of course, but other people on the show were not. I even remember seeing one of the comics from season one of last comic standing, and he was awful. The friend I went with and I looked at each other and both said, “I  could do that.” After that experience I signed up for a stand up comedy class with a casting director because I like taking performing arts classes. I think it’s common for a lot of women to start by taking a class because it’s sort of a safe space where you understand the relationship and expectations between yourself and the instructor. I’m going to pay this person for lessons. They’re going to offer me information, knowledge, and feedback, and I’m going to do the work and then there will be a showcase at the end. After one 8 week course and a really fantastic showcase, I started doing open mics and bringer shows in LA.

What inspires you or drives you?

I’m inspired by life and other artists.

I’m not sure what drives me. These are the talents and gifts I have to offer to the world, and I found a way to get paid for them.

What is some advice you would give to aspiring comics?

Watch more comedy. Every new comic I meet tries really hard to find opportunities to get on stage, but they make the same mistakes over and over again. I wish they would watch more live performances with a critical eye, take notes, and learn from what they see. Watch good comics, watch bad comics, watch your taped sets, and make adjustments.

Are there obstacles you've faced and how did or do you persevere?

I’d say time is the biggest obstacle for me. Being a mom is a 24 hour a day job. I had a hard time managing time before I was a mom, so my day has devolved into pure chaos. I’d love to do it all, honestly, I try to do it all, but there is just not enough time.

If I had a benefactor to fund my artistic endeavors, like artists in the Harlem renaissance and the French renaissance I would do nothing but create artwork. I’d hire a maid and a driver and I’d see the world with my family, and we would create art together.

What's something awesome that's happened to you recently?

Every time I have money in my bank account and more money coming, and the rent is already paid, and the bills are checked off the list, I feel so damn blessed and appreciative to the universe for taking care of me. To work full time as an artist is a dream come true.  I also got very close to “finishing the laundry “ last month and that felt pretty dang awesome.

Are there some big accomplishments and or credits you're proud of and would like mentioned?

I have an Open Bar Special on YouTube called “MomBod” that came out this month. I also have a self produced special that hasn’t been released because it’s in need of funding to finish it, and I’d be very open to collaborating with investors. I’m really proud of it and dream that I can share it someday soon.
